People of Greece.

Aspasia:

·        Had a big influence on the government

·        Beautiful, articulate woman that offered herself to men

·        Met Pericles and accidently fell in love

·        Pericles left his wife for Aspasia, but they never got married to each other.

Odysseus:

·        On his way home from War and was detoured because of Gods throwing challenges at him

Isagoris:

·        Last guy before democracy kicked in

·        Wasn’t kind and generous to his people

·        Corrupt

·        Isagoris defends his son and keeps him out of jail because his son raped and attacked a woman.

·        His theory was that he is Isagoris and that is his son.

·        After 3 days, his people ran him out of town and out of office.

Cleisthenes:

·        War hero, brilliant, and was told he should be in charge

·        Considered himself way above other people in a way.

·        First, guy to be smart enough to declare that regular people need some power too.

·        He will take over, but will involve regular people. (Invention of Democracy)

          Ostracize- to be cast out; sent away

·        Soon, Cleisthenes soon got out of hand declaring things needed to be done, and soon voted to ostracize him.

Xeres & Darius:

·        Different beliefs and customs

·        Presided over a huge empire that reached over the middle-east

·        Would’ve been happy to take over Greece

·        The ships and colonies in Greece held them back from taking over the whole Mediterranean

·        Darius the 1^st, said to sail across to Greek mainland, called Marathon, and to invade.

·        They send over invading force, Greeks don’t have enormous fighting force, but get there and find out that everyone is fighting for themselves.

·        Persians come in with professional soldiers while Greeks defend their way of life and don’t care if they die as long as they defend their way of life.
